Hi Hilary,

How exciting! I wanted to share some of our collection and suggestions about art in public schools-

The City of Baltimore, has a huge collection of public art commissions installed in public school buildings from the 60’s through late 80’s(and even a little early 90’s.)You can view a 2015 photo survey we made of the works here: https://flic.kr/s/aHskwNqQuM

Many of these commissions are very  “of their time” and many more are woefully in disrepair, but they do really run a full range of mediums and creative applications of public art from a diverse group of artists working across this time period. There is everything from modernist mosaics, photo realistic paintings, fibers, and suspended sculpture. Over time, and what we are facing now, is a that the buildings are reaching the end of their lifespan and undergoing large scale renovations or demolitions; and with so many of the artworks architecturally incorporated into the buildings, we are finding it difficult to negotiate the preservation of artwork designed for these very specific spaces and times.

Finally, I know your just getting started ,but once you install artwork,  make sure there is a lot of documentation on-site at the school.  School Administrators and Principals can change often, and they are the masters of their domain, a project beloved by one principal may seem out of place to another.  Make sure each school artwork is clearly labeled as artwork, with a name or contact number for maintenance; as well as a documentation binder with maintenance plan stored in the main office.  That’s your back up if a principal asks the facility/janitor staff to go re-paint a sculpture in the school colors a couple years after it’s installed.

Subject: Public art examples in elementary, middle, and high school settings

Dear Public Art Colleagues,

I am looking of examples of public art projects in schools, primarily elementary, middle, and high school settings, although collages/universities could work. We have a $200 million construction project in our near future to build an elementary and middle school complex. I am creating a presentation for the current school community to build advocacy for full implementation of our percent-for-art ordinance. Any project examples would be appreciated but I would love to include a few projects in the $1-2 million range to highlight what would be possible with full funding. I am looking for examples in a range of styles and disciplines and may include: a singular large component, multiple components spread throughout the school, multiple artists, participatory, etc.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hilary
