Hello Steve,

In Virginia, the law requires Workers Compensation insurance if the contractor has 3 or more employees. Most artists don't, and if are a bigger studio, they carry Workers Comp.
We leave it in our contract which sites the law.

Dear Arts Administrators and Public Artists,

Is it common for public artists to be required to carry Workers Comp insurance?  I know carrying General Liability Insurance is a common requirement, but in my years I have not heard of artists being required to carry Workers Comp.

Attorneys for a private developer we're working with are seeking to require an artist who has liability to also carry workers comp.  The developer has or will contract directly with this artist.
