#NHYouthArtsMonth

Hi Friends,

We have collectively been working on Youth Arts Month since August. Frumie, Marcia, and I want to thank all of you for your work making this collaborative effort a success. Last year at the NH Arts Educators Leadership Connector you identified that a unified Youth Arts Month was a goal we could realize. And now it’s finally here.

I wanted to give you an update on the moving parts of YAM and challenge you to engage the educators in your own networks to get involved. This could be a targeted email to your colleagues and education association members with a bulleted list of things they can do. If we could get half the Arts educators in the state to do one thing it would be:

·         Let our friends and family know: schedule 5 social media posts about your work as an Arts educator or the work happening in your classroom. On the NHALN website we have 7 images you anyone can download that promotes a stronger field of Arts Ed in NH.

This is especially important as the President’s proposed budget eliminates the National Endowment for the Arts and drastic cuts to the Department of Education, among many other important agencies that advance the work of the humanities. We know that when there are proposed cuts to education, the Arts are unfortunately one of the first areas targeted.

Other suggestions include:

·         Remind you school administration: Let them know that it is Youth Arts Month. Remind them of skills you are practicing in your class.

·         Host a school event or design a bulletin board: Celebrate the skills learned through the Arts. ANYTHING you do that is arts related can be part of Youth Arts Month.

·         Demonstrate our strength and depth. Add any event you are holding to the statewide Youth Arts Month map so we can d how NH widely values the Arts.

·         Invite elected officials such as school board members or local legislators to a school performance or ask them to simply spend time observing students engaged in creative activities. The NH Arts Learning Network has a toolkit with sample emails for inviting officials and organizing an event.

·         The Arts are taking over the Capital! Lend your voice and your presence by attending one of the events listed on the NHALN calendar, including the Statewide Youth Arts Month reception, March 4, 2018.

·         Visit the NH Arts Learning Network for many more suggestions on celebrating YAM and advocating for increased access to the Arts for NH youth.

Arts Education takes over the Capital

It’s happening! Each Arts discipline will be represented at or near the State House in Concord. The exhibit in the tunnel between the State House and the Legislative Office Building has been given approval. There are groups performing, press releases and news briefs scheduled, and much more. We have created a postcard and poster that will specifically highlight the events happening at the Capital, but we will work to promote ALL events taking place across the state. You can now see a preview of our new website. It will eventually have the same url as our current one so all old links to the homepage will still work. Check out the STEAM and Youth Arts Month pages.
