City of Las Vegas has a Mayor’s Fund already in place, and a project for COVID relief efforts could be added, although it has not yet.

This fund does still have in place a “Community Healing” project from the 1 October shooting that is actively receiving donations, although they have slowed significantly – but that may be a factor in why we haven’t yet activated a project in the Mayor’s Fund for COVID.

Hi Randy,

We worked with our state arts commission and the Arizona Community Foundation to start a fund for COVID-19 emergency relief grants to individual artists. Artists are our priority at this time, given the CARES Act funding, a few local foundations making emergency organization grants, and we lifted all of our restrictions on our organizational grants to ensure all funds could be used for operating support.

Outside of our office, the Community and Economic Development Department partnered with an outside financing organization and the community foundation to make grants to small businesses, including nonprofits in designated vulnerable and underserved neighborhoods in Phoenix.

Working with the community foundation was the easiest way to ensure tax-deductible donations could be accepted and deployed without the bureaucracy.

Subject: [Americans for the Arts] Donation Fund Question

Hello All,

We have legislated a COVID Relief Fund that allows the City to accept and deploy funds related to community needs (including Arts and Culture). Do other cities have donation funds for COVID, and what are they prioritizing?

Thanks for your consideration,

Randy
